A Case Study on Hospital-Based Home Infusion

Organization Overview

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is a large non-profit hospital in Shawnee Mission, Kansas that focuses on whole body care for their patients to get them well and keep them well.  SMMC is a premier hospital with cutting edge technology, a welcoming environment, a large array of services that is focused on providing the best services and care for their patients and the community.

Challenge

In the constantly changing environment of healthcare, SMMC was dealing with decreasing reimbursements and increasing costs.  They needed a way to generate a new source of revenue in order to combat these challenges.

Opportunity and Results

ProHealth worked with SMMC to determine that there were hundreds of patients each year being discharged that could generate a significant amount of revenue for the medical center.  These patients required home infusion therapy and were being discharged to national or local unaffiliated home infusion providers.  ProHealth worked with SMMC to create Shawnee Mission Home Infusion, a hospital-based home infusion business utilizing the hospital's existing pharmacy, resources, and personnel.  Now, SMMC is able to keep these discharged patients on service and provide a more continuous care experience to them by providing their home infusion therapy, while ProHealth handles the administrative tasks of the business (order intake, insurance verification, billing, reimbursement, and collections).  In addition to generating a new source of revenue for their hospital pharmacy, the new home infusion business allowed SMMC to take advantage of significant cost savings by decreasing length of stay for uninsured home infusion patients.

SMMC has gained an additional revenue stream utilizing existing resources, realized significant cost savings, and is able to provide more continuous care to their patients, helping them better fulfill their mission.

A Case Study in Hospital-Based Home Infusion Therapy

Organization Overview

Broward Health is nationally recognized as a hospital system providing world class health care services in South Florida.  The system is comprised of more than 30 facilities and provides a large array of services with cutting-edge technology.  Their mission is to provide quality health care to the people they serve and to support the needs of all physicians and employees.

Challenge

Broward Health was facing serious challenges with decreasing reimbursements, increasing costs and an ever growing elderly population as patients.  They were in need of a solution that would allow them to be better prepared for the uncertain challenges ahead.

Opportunity and Results

Having more than 30 facilities and serving thousands of patients, Broward Health had an enormous opportunity to recapture millions of dollars in lost revenue.  Broward Health was discharging thousands of patients to an external, unaffiliated, home infusion provider when they could have been capturing the revenue instead.  The revenue from this opportunity would completely offset the decreasing reimbursements and the added costs they were facing while simply utilizing the resources they already had in place.

Partnering with ProHealth Medical and leveraging their experience and expertise in the home infusion industry, allowed Broward Health to create a new revenue stream for their hospitals, realize significant cost savings, and provide more continuous care to their patients.  Broward Health is now able to keep patients on service and collect revenue by providing their home infusion therapy instead of discharging them to a non-affiliated provider.

Broward Health now has a profitable home infusion business and can offer a more comprehensive offering of services to their patients.

Organization Overview

Florida Hospital is a large, non-profit hospital system with seven locations around the Central Florida area.  Their mission is to extend the healing ministry of Christ and they employ a holistic approach to health the mind, body, and spirit.  Florida Hospital is well known as a destination hospital, offers a large variety of services, has a welcoming and caring environment, and focuses on the link between lifestyle and longevity by caring for their patients in sickness and in health.

Challenge

Florida Hospital, being a larger hospital system with multiple locations, was looking to maximize their service offerings and improve their ability to provide continuous care to their patients.  Also, Florida Hospital was interested in finding additional revenue opportunities for the system to offset the continuous cuts in reimbursements and the rising costs they were facing across the board.

Opportunity and Results

In order to provide a more comprehensive offering of services, Florida Hospital formed a partnership with ProHealth.  The partnership made it possible for Florida Hospital to capture a significant amount of revenue from patients that were already being serviced in the hospital and allowed them to provide more of a continuous care experience.  ProHealth enabled Florida hospital to provide home infusion therapy to their patients and avoid losing revenue to non-affiliated providers.

Now, after more than twenty years in the home infusion industry, Florida Hospital is a dominant provider in the Central Florida area, has generated a significant amount of revenue, experienced great cost savings, and has a more comprehensive offering of services to their patients.
