A Case Study on a Home Infusion Pharmacy Joint Venture

“ProHealth has successfully run a home infusion program for Florida Hospital for almost 20 years.  In addition to generating significant revenue for the system, ProHealth also helps reduce inpatient hospital costs.  ProHealth is a significant resource to Florida Hospital in helping us extend our healing mission into the community.” Bryan Stiltz, VP of Florida Hospital, Orlando FL (2009)

Organization Overview

Florida Hospital is a 2,247 bed, non-profit hospital system with 22 locations around Central Florida.  Florida Hospital is a part of the Adventist Health System and treats more patients than any other hospital in the nation.   It treats over 120,000 inpatients and 500,000 outpatients annually.

Challenge

Florida Hospital was looking to maximize service offerings and provide continuous care to patients.  With multiple locations throughout Florida, Florida Hospital had to reduce inefficiencies with its service offerings.   Florida Hospital formed a partnership with ProHealth to provide home infusion therapy across the wide geographic area.  ProHealth manages the home infusion patients for the entire system from a single centralized location and removes all redundant processes.

Opportunity and Results

After more than twenty years in the home infusion industry, Florida Hospital is a dominant provider throughout Central Florida.  FHHI has generated a significant amount of revenue, experienced great cost savings and provides a more comprehensive offering of services.

A Case Study On Hospital-Based Home Infusion Therapy

Organization Overview

The Broward Health System is comprised of more than 30 facilities in South Florida.  It is one of the 10 largest public health systems in the nation with over 1300 hospital beds.

Challenge

Broward Health was facing serious challenges due to a growing elderly patient population and decreasing reimbursements associated with their care.  Broward was looking for a solution that would allow for more efficient care and could offset the lost revenue.

Opportunity and Results

Broward Health was discharging thousands of patients to an external, unaffiliated, home infusion provider. There was an enormous opportunity to recapture millions of dollars in lost revenue for the system while providing a better service to the patients. The Broward Infusion Group was formed and was able to completely offset the decreasing reimbursements.

Broward Health now has a profitable home infusion business and provides a more comprehensive offering of services to its patients through the ProHealth partnership.

A Case Study on Hospital-Based Home Infusion

Organization Overview

Shawnee Mission Medical Center (SMMC) is a 504 bed non-profit hospital in Shawnee Mission, Kansas that focuses on whole body care for patients. SMMC is a member of the Adventist Health System and serves over 20,000 inpatients and 180,000 outpatients annually.

Challenge

With decreasing reimbursements being a major focus, SMMC needed a way to generate a new source of revenue to combat these challenges.

Opportunity and Results

SMMC partnered with ProHealth to create Shawnee Mission Home Infusion. The new service line utilizes an existing hospital pharmacy and staff to mix and deliver the medication while ProHealth manages the administrative duties. Before the partnership, SMMC’s home infusion patients were being discharged to unaffiliated providers in the community. SMMC is now able to keep their discharged patients on service and provide a more continuous care experience.

SMMC has gained a new revenue stream through existing resources, realized significant cost savings on uninsured patients, and has provided more continuous care to patients, helping to better fulfill the hospital’s mission.
